Reviews of Pushover
Great app! Can be used as an alarm system.
Comments: I strongly recommend this app for simple alarm notifications. It has various melodies so you can distinguish from other app notification sounds. It is also very easy to use.
Pros:
I am using this app as an alarm system for 2-3 years. When something goes wrong in our SaaS infrastructure I get a notification from the app. I act fast and fix the problem asap. I have chosen a very loud and disturbing melody so even if I'm asleep I wake up or I can recognize the sound and know something is wrong.
Cons:
Pushover is exactly the same when I purchased it years ago. It should be updated regularly. It would be good to have some other nice features as well.
Making Life Fun
Comments: Okay, so full disclosure, I only used this to receive notifications of sales from my Payhip account (via integration with Zapier) over the busy holiday season because I wanted a cheering cha-ching in the depths of winter. It’s probably one of the more minor/frivolous uses, but I can completely see how it could easily prove highly useful with the right service.
Pros:
I love that Pushover allowed me to set up notifications from a site that doesn’t usually offer them.
Cons:
I found it a little bit difficult to set up at first, and very nearly gave up.
Alternatives Considered:
Great price for few features
Pros:
The thing I like the most it's the simplicity of it. It only has one or two features to allow you to send notifications, also the price per message it's pretty low so if you really don't have tons of notifications it's pretty good.
Cons:
The lack of features and facilities. A lot of tools different than Pushover offers tons of features that Pushover lacks. They are not an incident management tool, they are just a notification service so you will have to manage your own schedules, escalation policies, etc. Also it's horrible that you have to purchase the Android App aside from the cost per message itself, they only want you to spend a few bucks on the app that works poorly. Also the website works poorly sending alerts with delay.
Best Push Notification Service for iOS
Comments: I needed push notifications about website downtime with Hetrix (free uptime monitoring) and they supported this app. I eventually also used it to get notifications about web-page changes in conjunction with the Firefox extension PageProbe which helped immensely for instant updates about page changes such as "in stock" alerts for hard-to-find products during the pandemic.
Pros:
I love the flexibility of this service. I bought the iOS app one-time for $5 and I've been able to send push notifications to my phone for website uptime using Hetrix and other services.
Cons:
It would be nice if they had some type of "curl generator" or API JSON generator to make it easier to assemble the API calls needed. Other than that, if you know bit about APIs, it's easy to do yourself.
Set and forget push notifications
Comments: A lot of software has pre-built pushover integration which makes it super simple to implement.
Pros:
Pushover integration is very simple for the other software that I use and allows notifications to be easily pushed to my devices.
Cons:
Nothing. It worked first time and has continued to work daily for the last couple of years. Adding integrations is simple.
Get a notification about literally anything, to all your devices
Comments: I can get notified about anything I want to by programming it to run on a server and sending it to a Pushover API. Great for being notified about technical emergencies, setting up nudges for my custom productivity systems, you name it!
Pros:
Reliable and quick notification delivery I can install it on any of my devices Highly customizable After a single payment (per device), I can use it as much as I reasonably would ever want to, forever
Cons:
Web UI is not very convenient, and looking through notification history can be a little difficult. But that's a minor nitpick.
I use Pushover every day to get more customized social notifications!
Pros:
I've been using Pushover for over a year now to receive social notifications that are more customized that the standard options provided within the native apps and networks. I use it together with Zapier to work for my needs.
Cons:
There's not a lot of cons I can think of. It works well, has a simple layout, and gets the job done.
Works great and huge limits for one flat fee per platform
Comments: Just great. Really happy I found this service. I use it with Healthchecks.io and it has never failed me.
Pros:
How easy it is to integrate Pushover with other services. It's also extremely reliable. I have never experienced an outage with them.
Cons:
The UI looks a bit outdated, both on phone and website. Not a problem, but could probably be improved. The limit is really high as well of messages (10k)
