> **Pros**: DEVONthink is great for any individual looking for a powerful data management solution. It offers excellent data privacy, as all data is stored locally with optional encryption. It also gives users full control and ownership of their data, though this does require some technical skill. Search and retrieval is excellent, and it supports almost every kind of file imaginable. It is unashamedly feature-packed for power users, making it a great choice for those who need a comprehensive data management solution.

> **Cons**: DEVONthink's learning curve is quite steep and the AI search features are not obvious. Additionally, the Mac version is noticeably more powerful than the iOS/iPadOS versions, which can be a limitation for people who rely on mobile devices. I think it may also be missing a trick by not integrating a local generative AI trained on DEVONthink's data.

It's refreshing to find a Mac-based power user app that rewards the effort you put in with the friction it removes from your workflow. > **Pros**: DEVONthink facilitates the paperless office. It makes it easy to keep everything in order and in sync. Whatever files you have, from a plain text note or jpg-picture to a pdf or excel-file, DEVONthink lets you view it before opening it in another programme with a simple click. It is not only a database, but lets you automate a lot of tasks and has an amazing AI capability of identifying similar files regardless of where they are located.

> **Cons**: DEVONthink is a database manager, so the files in the groups (their word for folders) are not necessarily located in the same folders on your computer, which makes it a bit complicated to open very specialised files for which DEVONthink do not identify the right programmes.
> 
> If you want to work towards a paperless offce, buy DEVONthink. If you have loads of pdfs and want the best search function out there, buy DEVONthink.
